Asa Lynn (Ace) Powell (1912-1978) was raised near Glacier Park. He attended school on the Blackfeet Reservation, and developed a profound respect for nature. Along with his career as a rancher, he created over 15,000 paintings, prints and sculptures in the forty years preceding his death, representing his love of Western life and the Blackfeet culture.  Come enjoy this special selection from the inspirational legacy left to us by our own long-time Kalispell resident and one of Montana's most respected and prolific Western artists.
Sponsorship graciously provided by: NUPAC of Kalispell and Trails End Collection: Dr. & Mrs. Van Kirke and Helen Nelson.
Thanks to David Powell, Ace's son, for the wonderful talk at the opening reception on Thursday, January 10, 2002.

Once the world is divided, the parts need names. There are already enough names.
One must know how to stop.
Knowing when to stop averts trouble.

Lao Tsu, Tao Te Ching, from Chapter 32

A series of mixed media works including sculpture and installation pieces inspired by language and universal experience. The content and formal qualities of her

A limited edition vinyl recording of the artist performing "Basic English" is available for purchase during the exhibition.

"I see in clay a soft and subtle beauty, a gentleness and contentment... I simply guide it to completion."

Sue Abbrescia attended Indiana University, married Joe Abbrescia, from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and raised her family, putting art aside in favor of horses, which she kept in Illinois and Montana.
"About twenty years ago.." as she starts to tell her story, twenty-five pounds of terra cotta clay came into her hands, and became a sculptured patio planter, starting a whole new career.

Sue's remarkable hand-coiled ceramics, made from hundreds of small sculpted shapes, proudly share our West Gallery with Joe's prize-winning canvases.
