L.A. Huffman: Montana's Frontier Photographer
June 5 through September 6, 2003

Brought to you by the sponsorship of Melody and Stuart Johnson

L.A. Huffman arrived in Miles City, Montana Territory in 1879, early enough to witness the end of the great buffalo herds and the last of the hostilities between early settlers and Native Americans. He recorded the beginning, hey day, and end of the open range days and, for this period, no one did it better. Most of Huffman's photographs were taken on the range, and because he carried his cameras on horseback, along with the chemicals and glass plates needed to create permanent images, he was able to capture authentic action photographs of ranch life, cattle drives, wild horse roundups, and other elements of western ranching. He died in 1931 leaving an artistic and sensitive legacy of the Old West.
