Gary Schildt (1938 - )

Gary Schildt was born June 5, 1938 on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, and is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet tribe. He received his art training at the San Francisco Academy of Fine Art and the City College in San Francisco, California where he studied both commercial art and photography. An instructor encouraged him to pursue fine art rather than the commercial aspects of art, Schildt recalls, "I was told that if I began a career in art and did not follow the current trends, I would have to create my own demands; if I could not, I would discover the meaning of poverty in fine art." His work is inspired by a creative process that he believes originates from daydreaming. Gary gives his childhood experiences on his grandfather's ranch on the Blackfeet Reservation credit for his journey to becoming an artist. Schildt is a founding member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group, and is well known for his oil paintings and bronze sculptures of contemporary Blackfeet Indian life. He has won many art awards, and is a respected Native American artist.
